Term 1 Report Cards will go home on Wednesday, December 18.  Below is an explanation of the new reporting assessment practices.

Dear Parent(s) and/or Guardian(s):

British Columbia has a redesigned curriculum which affords us an opportunity to think about how we assess and report on student progress. Our goal is to ensure that families are well informed about their children’s progress.  We are currently working towards aligning student progress reporting with the new curriculum.

This year Saanich Middle Schools will be changing our assessment practices to reflect the BC Ministry of Education guidelines for communication of learning. Educational research has demonstrated that positive on-going communication between home and school is instrumental to student success. Communication can take the form of written reports, parent/teacher conferences, digital portfolios, student led conferences and student reflection and self-assessment.

In Saanich, we will be using updated descriptors to assess student learning (previously not yet meeting expectations, approaching expectations, meeting expectations and exceeding expectations). The new Proficiency Scale uses the descriptors Emerging, Developing, Proficient and Extending as explained below.

We hope that providing you with timely, flexible information about student progress this year will help ensure that you are well informed about your child’s learning. We value your feedback as we continue to evolve in the ways that we communicate student learning. If you have questions or concerns, please contact us at 250-652-7322.
