Dear Parents and Guardians:
This afternoon we shared some sad news with our former KELSET students. This morning, Mr. Darrell Whalen, a staff member at KELSET Elementary School passed away peacefully at the hospital with his family by his side.
Our school counselor, Mrs. de Klerk, relayed this information to our former KELSET students this afternoon and then provided the students an opportunity to share thoughts and feelings. Our Resource Room was opened for students who wished to have adult support.
This event may bring up questions, concerns, or fears for your child. Everyone's response will be different. A number of our students knew Mr. Whalen quite well and many did not. The passing of a staff member can often be a trigger, bringing up past losses. Parents and guardians are advised to be emotionally available to the possible responses of their children. Allow them to move in and out of grieving naturally.
