New Graduation Program and New Assessment Protocols

As part of its ongoing commitment to transforming K-12 curriculum and assessment, the Ministry of Education has announced its plans for the new Graduation Program and assessment protocols for students in grades 10-12.  With the new curriculum for K-9 already in place and mandatory for all students starting in September, these announcements provide more substance for the grade 10-12 program which is coming in next year and mandatory in 2017/18.

Alongside changes to curriculum, with a focus on big ideas, core competencies, inquiry, relevance and deep learning, comes welcome news of the elimination of the provincial examinations for Math 10, Science 10, English 10 and Social Studies 11.  Instead there will be a literacy assessment and a math assessment developed for students to take in, we believe, grade 10.  These assessments will not be related to courses per se, but will allow students to demonstrate their abilities in relation to standards and expectations.
